This 30 acre development of a multi-facility and Adventure Centre, including permanent Jamboree site, capable of accommodating 1,000 people at any given time will do much to enhance the border area between Cavan, Fermanagh and Monaghan.
Castlesaunderson estate
The Castlesaunderson estate straddles the border between County Fermanagh and County Cavan and is in close proximity to County Monaghan. It has been an aspiration of Scouting Ireland to have at least one National Campsite in each of the provinces. There is currently no facility that can be utilised within Ireland for large scale jamborees. The absence of such a facility has a negative impact on the scouting movements in Ireland.
In addition to attracting those from a scouting background the project also intends to attract young people from youth organisations and schools. The campsite will serve as a centre for cross-community interaction, which will lead to reconciliation, dialogue, mutual understanding and respect.
National events
This project will create a greater opportunity to strengthen community activities that will lead to sustainable community development. It is envisaged that a small number of national events will be held on the site each year.
The purpose of these events will be to raise the profile of the facility and to attract people to the region who would not normally visit a border location. It is envisaged that in excess of 12,000 young people will utilise the facility in its first year of existence.
Peace III funding
The Castlesaunderson Project is one of a small number of flagship projects thanks to €3,052,000 support from the European Union’s Peace III managed by the Special EU Programmes Body (SEUPB).
Cavan County Council and Scouting Ireland (SAI) are the lead partners in the project with the support of Scouting Association of Northern Ireland (SANI). The purpose of the funding stream is to create shared public spaces and reduce any underlying problems of sectarianism and segregation throughout Northern Ireland and the six border counties.
The project will serve as a catalyst in the economic social and cultural revival of a deprived and sparsely populated area.
