John Quinn in Johnston Central Library

Cavan County Council’s Library Service is delighted to welcome back a dear friend when it plays host to John Quinn, broadcaster & writer in Johnston Central Library on Thursday 22 October 2009 at 8p.m. John has been a frequent visitor to Cavan Libraries over the years, most recently when he appeared in a Literary Double Bill last October, discussing his own work and interviewing intrepid travel writer Dervla Murphy. Join us on this visit to explore with John the amazing people he has encountered throughout his radio career.

John Quinn has led an extraordinary and diverse life; working in the field of education for many years before joining RTÉ in 1975. Over the next 25 years, he worked as a radio producer and broadcaster, delivering some of RTÉ’s finest programmes. His radio work resulted not only in national awards and international acclaim, but also led to the publication of books such as ‘My Education’. Following the untimely and tragic death of his wife Olive in 2001, he produced a deeply moving personal documentary on their lives together, A letter to Olive. The book that followed ‘Sea of Love, Sea of Loss’, is equally powerful.

John is also a much-loved, award-winning children’s writer. His Bisto Book of the year – ‘The summer of Lily and Esme’ – is a modern Irish classic and always in demand. His new book ‘Specky Becky Bucks’ features a bespectacled young girl, a Gaelic football fanatic, who dreams of playing in Croke Park.

His novel for adults, ‘Generations of the Moon’, deals with sectarian strife along the border from 1926 – 1975. In his latest book, ‘Goodnight Ballivor, I’ll Sleep in Trim: A Childhood Memoir’, reflects his abiding and passionate interest in his own place.

A Literary Event not to be missed, everyone is welcome and admission is free. Light refreshments will be served at the event.

John Quinn is also appearing in Johnston Central Library, Cootehill Library and Bailieborough Library as part of Children’s Book Festival.

Whimsical Nature

An exciting exhibition of contemporary textile art by two young Cavan artists Jacqueline O’Neill and Aideen Lynch will open in the Johnston Library in Cavan town on 5 November. Both artists are recent graduates of Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology (GMIT), where they studied textile design for four years.

The exhibition entitled Whimsical Nature will feature a diverse range of textiles from their very successful GMIT degree show which took place in Galway in June. The exhibition consists of a range of both silk screen and digitally printed textiles with hand embroidery and a selection of chalk pastels and illustrations.

Aideen Lynch’s work was inspired by the rural landscape of both Galway and Cavan.

She has taken singular elements found in these environments, imagery of plants and animals, and has created a beautiful range of designs by silk screen printing onto hand dyed silk & cotton fabrics. She is exhibiting a selection of bean bags, cushions and a swing hammock, along with a series of framed pastel drawings and silk screen prints with embroidery.

Jacqueline O’Neill’s inspiration for this fantasy themed project came from her love of classic childrens’s books. “I began looking for fantastical aspects in my natural surroundings including plants, animals, landscapes and people whilst also experimenting with angles, scale and colour”. Through these methods she has created an exciting range of illustrative prints on naturally dyed fabrics. Her elements of handstitching add texture and richness to the fun and playful subject. Jacqueline’s prints, although works of art in their own right have also been applied to fashion and acessories for the contemporary female market.

Most of the pieces are available for purchase and commissions are also accepted.
