National car testing
From 4 January 2000, all private cars over 4 year old which use public roads in Ireland require to have a national car test.
Does my new car need to have a national car test?
Your car will need to have a national car test if the following applies:
- Your car is more than 4 years old.
- You have imported your car and it is more than 4 years old.
- Your car was last tested more than 2 years previously.

Does my commercial van require a National Car Test?
All commercial vans, lorries and trucks do not require to have an NCT. However, they do require to have a DOE test carried out.
