Councillor Madeleine Argue has been elected Cathaoirleach of Cavan County Council for 2018-2019.
Published on: 12 Jun 2018
Cllr Argue was nominated by Fine Gael party colleague Cllr Peter McVitty, and the nomination was seconded by Cllr Carmel Brady at Monday's Annual General Meeting of the Council.
Cllr Argue, who succeeds Cllr Paddy McDonald in taking up the role, becomes only the second woman to become Cathaoirleach of Cavan County Council, following in the footsteps of the late Cllr Veronica Sharkey.
Elected members from all sides of the chamber wished Cllr Argue well for the coming year and hailed her contribution to public life in Cavan over the past two decades.
In her first public speech as Cathaoirleach, Cllr Argue noted that 2018 markes the 100th anniversary of the vote first being extended to women and praised the contribution of women to politics in County Cavan.
Leas-Cathaoirleach of Cavan County Council for 2018-2019 will be Cllr Clifford Kelly, who succeeds Cllr Carmel Brady in the role.
