Cavan Food Strategy launched

Cavan is leading the way in the promotion of local food, according to RTÉ ‘Dragon’ and businessman Gavin Duffy.

Speaking at the launch of Taste of Cavan, which took place at The Olde Post Inn, Cloverhill, Co. Cavan on Thursday, 8th June, Dragons’ Den star Gavin, who recently invested in Cavan artisan jam and chutney producer Moran’s MegaJam, said “people around the country look to you as people who started an initiative that has gone on from success to success”.

Mr Duffy joined actor and Celebrity Masterchef star Simon Delaney and chefs Gearóid Lynch (The Olde Post Inn), Neven Maguire (MacNean House), Eddie Attwell (St Kyran’s Country House), Shane Smith (Airfield Estate), and Adrian Martin (RTÉ’s ‘Chef Adrian Eats Ireland’) to launch the 2017 event which takes place in Cavan Equestrian Centre, Cavan Town on Friday, 11th and Saturday, 12th August.

They will be joined at Taste of Cavan by Richard Corrigan, The Happy Pear, Catherine Fulvio, Brian McDermott, Norbert Neylon, Noel McMeel, Máire Dufficy and more.

This year’s Taste of Cavan will also see the return of Neven Maguire’s Home Chef of Cavan competition, which will see amateur chefs cook a delicious home-cooked meal using local produce to be in with a chance of winning a luxury food break.

As usual, the event will feature lots of activities in the Fun Zone to ensure an enjoyable day out for all the family, with giant slides and climbing walls, arts and crafts workshops, penalty shootout competitions, pet farms, and much more to keep the little ones amused.

As well as over 130 stands of top-quality local produce, and an array of star chefs, a new addition to this year’s events is a Smallholders’ Convention, where visitors can learn all about keeping their own chickens, planting crops in their garden or plot, and more.

Thursday’s event also saw the launch of the County Cavan Food Strategy, a document which will identify and develop new and innovative ways of growing the Cavan food sector.

Launching the strategy, Chief Executive Tommy Ryan said that food and farming were “at the heart of Cavan’s economy”.

“This six year strategy sets out what we want to achieve for Cavan; that County Cavan will recognised nationally and internationally as a home of quality food and drink, that the County will be regarded as a key destination for food tourism and one that nourishes and supports its food entrepreneurs,” said Mr Ryan.
