Slovenian Ambassador welcomed

The Ambassador of the Republic of Slovenia to Ireland, His Excellency Stanislav Vidovič, was welcomed to Cavan on Friday, 14 July for a discussion on strengthening cultural and trading links.

The meeting was facilitated by Senator Joe O’Reilly, who is chair of the Irish-Slovenia Parliamentary Friendship Group.

The Ambassador received presentations from Director of Service Eoin Doyle on County Cavan, from Acting Head of Enterprise Conor Craven on business and trade and from Cuilcagh Lakelands UNESCO Global Geopark Manager Gráinne O’Connor on the Geopark. Slovenia, like Cavan, boasts a transnational UNESCO Geopark.

Welcoming Ambassador Vidovič to Cavan, Leas-Chathaoirleach of Cavan County Council, Cllr Carmel Brady said, “Our two nations share a great deal in common, we are both republics, parliamentary democracies, we both declared our independence in the 20th centuries, and we are both proud members of the European Union – nations who, despite our small populations, continue to be influential voices on the international stage”.

“It is my firm hope that, through this meeting, we can grow links between our county and your nation and develop greater trade links, as well as promoting greater cultural understanding,” added Cllr Brady.

Thanking Leas-Chathaoirleach Brady and the council officials for their welcome, Ambassador Vidovič said, “I’m very happy to be the ambassador of Slovenia in Ireland because I believe that our two countries have many similarities, and we have a lot of opportunities to work together in the future. There are also challenges which we can overcome together, and I hope we will see more cooperation between Cavan and Slovenia in the future”.

During his trip to Cavan, Ambassador Vidovič also enjoyed a visit to Cavan County Museum, Ballyjamesduff, where he toured the recently renovated WWI Trench Experience, and stopped by the Ramor Theatre in Virginia, which has been recently renovated as part of the Virginia Civic, Cultural, and Library Services Centre project.
