Belturbet River Project

Cavan County Council welcome the approval by An Bord Pleanála for the proposed new jetty and amenity area project at the River Erne in Belturbet.

This project will provide modern mooring facilities meeting the expectations of local and visiting boat users to Belturbet. The river side and Morrissey park area will be enhanced as a family friendly environment. It is hoped that this development will attract many visitors to Belturbet and one the Belturbet community can be proud of and enjoy.

Cavan County Council intend to commence works once a contractor has been appointed. It is envisaged that the development will be completed in early summer 2014.

Before After

The central focus of the project is on the economic regeneration of towns and villages adjacent to their respective waterways. The inland waterway system is of paramount importance to the County of Cavan where an established tourism industry already exists particularly around cruiser hire and activities such as course Angling.

This project, known as the Belturbet RIVER Project was developed in consultation with the local community. Funding was secured under INTERREG IVA for the Regeneration in Villages and Emergency Rescue (RIVER).

The Project involves a collaborative initiative amongst, Ballymena Borough Council, Ballymoney Borough Council, Coleraine Borough Council, and the Community Rescue Services under the umbrella of the North East Partnership and Cavan County Council.

The Council wishes to acknowledge the support of Waterways Ireland in developing the project. Cavan County Council will also supply matching funding to the project which adds to the range of initiatives with particular emphasis on the recreational pursuits that the Council has successfully delivered in recent years to the town”.

This project is part-financed by the European Union’s INTERREG IVA Cross-border Programme and managed by the Special EU Programmes body.
