Safe Routes to School Scheme - St. Mary's National School, Virginia

Essential road safety improvement works at St. Mary's National School, Virginia will begin on Monday, 26 June. These works are funded under the governments Safe Routes to School Scheme.

The scope of works is to construct new footpaths, pedestrian crossings, road surfacing and new road markings on the R178 from the junction with the N3 for approximately 365 meters in the direction of Bailieborough.

This will offer a safe and accessible facility both to staff and students attending St. Mary’s National School and the wider community.

Construction of the new footpaths to include the following:

  • Provision of new pedestrian crossing and upgrade existing one
  • Erection of Safe Route to School banner.
  • Traffic Calming Measures i.e. Road Narrowing.
  • Upgrade of existing drainage along the scheme.
  • Road resurfacing and installation of new road markings.
  • Installation of Rain Garden to the front of school boundary.

It is anticipated that the works will be completed in late September/ early October subject to resources and weather conditions.
