€500,000 for Greenway Hub
Cavan County Council has secured half a million euro in funding for a Greenway Hub in Kingscourt to provide convenient and safe access to the popular 30km Boyne Valley to Lakelands Greenway.
The funding, which was awarded under Measure 3 of the Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme, was announced by Minister for Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht, Dara Calleary TD on Monday as part of a €16.5 million investment nationwide.
The Greenway Hub will be located at the former Kingscourt Railway Station complex on the R179 Carrickmacross Road on the outskirts of Kingscourt, and will provide car parking, seating, bike repair, e-bike charging, and a bus stop, in addition to provision for bike hire and landscaping and fencing.
The proposed hub, which was designed by Kingscourt-based firm Smith & Associates Architects, will add significant value to the 30km Boyne Valley to Lakelands Greenway, which links Kingscourt in County Cavan to Navan in County Meath. In tandem with this development, Kingscourt Community Development Association has plans to open a coffee shop and provide toilet facilities in the Railway Station complex adjacent to the proposed Hub.
Cathaoirleach of Cavan County Council, Councillor John Paul Feeley welcomed the funding, saying “This is a significant investment in our outdoor economy by Minister Dara Calleary and his officials and all at Cavan County Council are grateful for their ongoing support. Active, outdoor tourism is on the rise, and this new amenity is sure to bring increased investment to Kingscourt and East Cavan, while also providing improved access to this fantastic 30km greenway for local residents.”
“I offer my congratulations to all the council staff who have worked tirelessly to bring this project to this advanced stage,” added Cllr Feeley, concluding “I would also like to acknowledge my fellow elected members who have been steadfast in their support of projects such as this, ensuring that match funding is available”.
Chief Executive of Cavan County Council, Eoin Doyle added, “This development forms part of an overall strategic vision for Kingscourt, which sees our Rural Development and Tourism Section working with our Active Travel Team to link the town core with the greenway hub, to Dún an Rí Forest Park and, in time, to nearby accommodation providers. These strategic connections will create a critical mass of experiences, improve accessibility, and increase dwell time in the locality, thus contributing to the local economy”.
“I want to join with the Cathaoirleach in thanking Minister Calleary and his officials and also commending our dedicated staff and our councillors for their efforts driving this project forward, and I would also like to acknowledge the support of CIE, the landowner of the site, who have backed this project from the outset.” he added.
A Part VIII planning application in respect of this development was approved by the members of the Bailieborough-Cootehill Municipal District in March 2025 and construction on the project is now expected to commence in early 2026.
