Cavan Swift Summer Stroll - A Walk on The Special Summer Migrating Bird
As summer graces Cavan, a special visitor returns once again: the Swift. These wonderful birds are a vital part of our natural heritage—but one that is increasingly under threat. Since 1998, Nationally the breeding population has declined by a staggering 69% with habitat loss for their nesting a key factor. But here in Cavan, local communities, conservationists, and volunteers are attempting to reverse that trend.
This year, the West Cavan Swift Survey is underway, led by BirdWatch Ireland’s Tara Adcock and Helen Taylor (surveyor), in collaboration with the local Cavan branch of BirdWatch Ireland. The project is supported by the Local Biodiversity Action Fund through Cavan County Council’s Heritage and Biodiversity Office and the National Parks and Wildlife Service. This event builds on the East Cavan Swift Survey from last year that was supported by the same grant.
The data gathered from this year’s survey will be utilised to inform planning locally for the conservation of this threatened species. The survey is one of three swift surveys underway in Galway, Cavan, and Fingal, Co. Dublin with Birdwatch Ireland. We at Cavan Heritage and Birdwatch Ireland would be very interested in your help finding these special summer visitors in the Breffni County!
In an aim to raise awareness and involve the community, a Swift Summer Stroll is taking place this Wednesday at 7pm, beginning at Johnston Central Library in Cavan Town. Participants will visit notable sites around the town and learn how to identify these birds. The walk will end with refreshments at Cullies Maxol Station. The event is proudly supported by Cavan County Council and welcomes all nature enthusiasts—whether seasoned birdwatchers or curious newcomers.
If you spot Swifts in your local area, please report them by emailing swifts@birdwatchireland.ie or logging your sighting on the National Biodiversity Data Centre website.
