The Wildlife (Amendment) Act 2000 substantially strenghtened the protection for wildlife previously available under the Wildlife Act 1976. In particular, it provides for the designation and conservation of NHAs. NHAs are sites that support elements of our natural heritage which are unique or are of outstanding importance at a national level. Any development in or near a NHA should avoid significant adverse impact on the features for which the site has been designated. There are two NHAs and eighteen proposed NHAs in County Cavan. These are listed below.
