National Heritage Week 2025
Heritage week is a very special nine days in Cavan where people share what is special about their heritage with the wider community. It is an opportunity to see places which are not always open to the public or to explore areas with experts sharing their knowledge.
We work with a wide range of communities, individuals and organisations who plan their events for many months to highlight them during Heritage Week. Heritage Week in Cavan is supported enthusiastically by management and elected representatives alike as it highlights the many fascinating and important sites and projects throughout the county.
This year, we really hope you will enjoy planning which sites to explore in Cavan during Heritage Week and perhaps you may be involved in hosting an event in future years.

The event commemorates Rifleman Luke Delaney 8122 *A* COY 2nd Battalion. Royal Irish Rifles who was killed in action in Belgium on the 8th November 1914 age 27 at the start of The First World War. He is remembered with honour with his name inscribed on the Menin Gate Memorial Ypres, Belgium where the Last Post is sounded every evening at 8 pm to pay tribute to the fallen soldiers of World War One with no known war graves. In 2019 the committee undertook the restoration and refurbishment of the birthplace of WW1 Veteran Luke Delaney to its original state while preserving the historical character and maintaining its architectural style. Original features were meticulously preserved in the renovation process, and the interior was fitted out with furniture of its time and utilities of that era 1914 . A major feature of the house include mannequins to depict the residents on the day Luke Delaney departed to the battlefields of the western Front We believe it is the only restored homestead of a War Veteran in the county of Cavan. Spoken in Fibre
Traditional Artist Sandra Coote Brings Family History to Life through Wool and Verse. Our current exhibition in the Eden Gallery is "Spoken in Fibre" by Sandra Coote - wool art inspired by the poems of Charles J. Coote. Raised on a farm in Co Longford, Sandra’s deep connection to the land has always been a source of inspiration. Now living and working alongside her husband Alan, she draws on generations of rural life to create deeply personal artwork that bridges the past and the present. Her latest body of work combines Charles J. Coote’s evocative poems – rich with reflection on his life and the countryside – with handcrafted wool illustrations made from wool from the sheep that graze the very land that Charles once walked. Sandra’s artistry weaves together memory, legacy, and landscape, offering a heartfelt tribute to Irish rural traditional and the enduring stories they inspire. Exhibition is open to the public in the Eden Gallery during museum opening hours.

Corravahan House: Architecture & History
Informative hourly tours of the historic Georgian-style country house, exploring its architecture and history, and its connections to the Beresford and Leslie families. Dating to 1840, built by a Beresford clergyman, later owned by the Leslie family, and carefully conserved over the past twenty years, Corravahan House retains all of its original period features. This "architectural gem" remains an extraordinarily intact example of Italianate Classical architecture. Corravahan stands as a fitting tribute to the works of William Farrell, some-time architect to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners. A tour of the house explores the architectural design and development of the house, setting it in the social and political environment inhabited by its wealthy owners. Corravahan House is a member of Historic Houses of Ireland.
