Autumn Lectures Series Returns to Cavan Libraries

Cavan Library Service's annual Autumn Lecture Series will return this October with a programme of talks exploring local, national and international history.

The series begins on Thursday, 1 October at 7pm in Johnston Central Library, when Dr Damian Gleeson presents “John Joseph Therry: Irish Landlord, Merchant and Priest in the Australian Colonies”. This lecture will examine the life of the pioneering priest and advocate of Irish convicts in Australia, while also highlighting connections between Cavan people and the Australian colonies.

On Thursday, October 8th at 7pm in Johnston Central Library Dr Georgina Laragy will present ‘Workhouses in Cavan, before and after independence.' Dr. Laragy is an Irish historian working in Glasnevin Cemetery and Trinity College Dublin and the talk will explore the role and legacy of workhouses in the county during a period of significant social and political change.

The third lecture will take place on Thursday, October 22nd at 7pm in Virginia Library. Dr Zoë Reid will discuss the 1926 Census, which has transformed access to the earliest demographic record of the Irish Free State. Now fully digitised and searchable, the census provides a unique insight into Irish society in the years following independence.

The series returns to Johnston Central Library on Thursday, October 29th at 7pm when Mary Sullivan, Manager of Cavan Genealogy Centre, presents “Their Footprint Can Be Found: Some of Cavan's Contribution to the Making of America.” The talk will focus on the exceptional growth of America after 1776 and on the legacies of various Cavan individuals and families as part of that growth.

The final presentation takes place on Thursday, November 5th at 7pm Johnston Central Library. Dr. Conor Mulvagh will discuss ‘People, place and politics: shifting allegiance in Cavan during the long Irish revolution.’ exploring political change and identity in the county during one of the most significant periods in Irish history.
