New Children's Book Celebrates The Speaking Horse of Cuilcagh

Creative Cavan, in partnership with Cuilcagh Lakelands Geopark, is delighted to launch The Speaking Horse of Cuilcagh, a beautifully illustrated children's book by local artist and storyteller Margaret McKenna.

The book tells the story of young Conor, who encounters a magical speaking horse and embarks on an unforgettable journey through the Cuilcagh landscape. Along the way, he meets legendary figures, discovers ancient stories, and explores the rich natural and cultural heritage of the region.

Building on the success of the Speaking Horse of Cuilcagh animation project, the publication brings the mythology and folklore of the Cuilcagh Lakelands Geopark to a new generation of readers through imaginative storytelling and striking illustrations

A unique feature of the book is the inclusion of QR codes throughout the story, linking readers to short videos of the actual locations featured in the narrative. This innovative approach allows the reader to connect directly with the landscapes, legends and heritage of the Geopark while encouraging exploration and learning.

The project forms part of Creative Cavan's ongoing commitment to supporting local artists, celebrating place-based storytelling, and finding creative ways to connect communities with their cultural heritage.

Speaking at the launch, Cathaoirleach of Cavan County Council, Cllr Carmel Brady officially launched the book welcoming the publication as an important contribution to the cultural life of the region:

"The Speaking Horse of Cuilcagh captures the imagination while showcasing the unique stories, landscapes and traditions of the Cuilcagh area. Through creativity and storytelling, it encourages young people to discover and value the rich heritage that surrounds them."

The launch event in Dowra will celebrate the project and recognise the contribution of Margaret McKenna, whose creative work continues to bring local stories to new audiences.
