Contracts signed for multi-million St Michael’s Hall Project
Cavan County Council has signed contracts with local firm Crosserlough Construction for the creation of a new community hub at St Michael’s Hall, Cootehill.
The project will involve conservation and refurbishment works to the historic, 120-year-old hall, in addition to the demolition of an existing extension to make way for a contemporary new extension, with the redeveloped facility to comprise a sports hall, meeting rooms, an auditorium and a stage.
The project, which received €6,248,330 in funding through the Rural Regeneration Development Fund from the Department of Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht, with match funding provided by Cavan County Council.
Craft Studio Architects are overseeing the Architect-Led Design team on the major project, which will see the retention and complete refurbishment of the existing Hall while the rear extension to the hall is to be demolished and replaced with a contemporary new extension and sports hall. The renovated and extended community centre will provide spaces for a multiplicity of uses to function within the premises.
Signing contracts for the project, Cathaoirleach of Cavan County Council, Cllr Carmel Brady said, “I am delighted to have reached this significant milestone in the provision of a transformative new community hub in Cootehill. This building has a rich history and has been at the heart of the community over the past 120 years. This ambitious project will safeguard its future while building upon that impressive legacy and helping to revitalise Cootehill’s town centre”.
Chief Executive of Cavan County Council, Eoin Doyle, added, “This is a great day for Cootehill and the surrounding areas. This significant €6.2million investment by the Department of Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht, supplemented by match funding from Cavan County Council’s own resources, will have a transformative effect on the local area”.
“The fact that a local firm has won the tender is also a boost for the local economy. This multi-million euro contract will support local jobs and aid growth within the county. I congratulate the staff who have worked so hard to bring this project to this advanced stage and would also like to acknowledge the key role played by our elected members who have made the crucial match funding available to allow us to pursue this ambitious project,” added Mr Doyle.
The project is expected to be complete in 2028, with construction work to commence shortly.
