Boil Water Notice - Corlough Group Water Scheme (GWS)

Date of Boil Water Notice: 19th October 2026

Coliform and E.coli bacteria have been detected in samples taken from Corlough GWS on the 14th October 2026. Following advice from the Health Service Executive, Cavan County Council has issued a Boil Water Notice to protect the users of this supply.

When preparing water for use, it must be boiled for at least 10 minutes, bringing it to a vigorous, rolling boil. The water must then be allowed to cool, covered and stored in a refrigerator or cold place.

1: Prepared Water (Boiled and Cooled), must be used for:

  • Drinks made with water.
  • Preparation of salads and similar foods, which are not cooked prior to eating.
  • Brushing of teeth.
  • Making of ice.

* Note in relation to the preparation of infant feeds:

  • If preparing infant feeds with tap water, please ensure that the tap water has been brought to the boil once and cooled. Do not use water that has been re-boiled several times.
  • In the event bottled water is used for the preparation of infant feeds, it should be boiled once and cooled. If you are using bottled water for preparing baby food, be aware that some natural mineral water may have high sodium content. The legal limit for sodium in drinking water is 200mg/l. Check the label on the bottled water to make sure the sodium or ‘Na’ concentration is not greater than 200mg/l.
  • If it is, then it is advisable to use a different type of bottled water. If no other water is available, then use this water for as short a time as possible. It is important to keep babies hydrated.

2: Unprepared water can be used for:

  • Personal hygiene, bathing and flushing of toilets. (But not for brushing teeth or gargling)

3: Attention:

Please note the following:

  • Domestic water filters will not render water safe to drink.
  • Water from the hot tap is also unsafe to drink.
  • All ice cubes and filtered water in fridges/freezers should be discarded. Ice can be made from cooled boiled water.
  • Children should not swallow water when bathing. So please take care.

4: Who is most at risk?

People with impaired immune systems, young children and the elderly are most at risk. So please ensure guidance within this notice is strictly adhered to until further notice.

5: Take Care:

Care should be taken with boiled water to avoid burns and scalds as accidents can easily happen, especially with children.

6: How long before the boil water notice can be lifted?

We do not know at present, but Cavan County Council will continue to liaise with the Health Service Executive, with a view to lifting the Boil Water Notice as soon as practicable.

7: How will we keep you informed?

You will be kept informed via letter and email of the investigative results and date of lifting of the restriction.

Remember to boil water as advised until further notice.
