Broadband

High speed broadband is a necessity for everyone and is an enabler of any modern functioning economy. Cavan County Council look forward to assisting in the rollout of the national broadband plan in County Cavan to help citizens, schools, communities & businesses in County Cavan to access modern connectivity.

How can I get High Speed Broadband?

  • Using your Eircode, check your address on the National Broadband Plan High Speed Broadband Map www.broadband.gov.ie
  • If you are in the AMBER area you will get high speed broadband under the State intervention phase of the National Broadband Plan. For updates and progress reports check www.broadband.gov.ie
  • If you in a LIGHT BLUE area check the National Broadband Ireland website to find out when high speed broadband will roll out in your area.
  • If you are in a BLUE area contact a Retail Service Provider in your area to place an order.

In Cavan, there are 16,200 premises in the Intervention Area (IA) AMBER area of the National Broadband Plan which includes homes, farms, commercial businesses and schools. Despite Cavan having a relatively high percentage of connections needing to be delivered under the NBP (38%), the county still has an extensive fibre infrastructure around the urban centres and some larger rural villages.

Local Authority Role

Broadband officers are based in local authorities around the country. The role of the broadband officer is of vital importance as they provide a single point of contact within the county for engagement with telecommunications providers and to assist National Broadband Ireland in the efficient rollout of the National Broadband Plan.

The implementation of Cavan County Council’s Digital Strategy will also drive awareness of the plan and ensure the county is ready to take full advantage of the service when it comes on-stream.

Broadband Connection Points (BCPs)

Broadband Connection Points (BCPs) are public locations which have been selected to receive high-speed connectivity of the National Broadband Plan. The BCPs in identified public places will leverage the high-speed broadband connection through a range of initiatives. Some facilities will also have hot-desks, and some will be digital hub business centres where digital training, business information events, and other SME supports are organised.

In advance of homes and businesses receiving future-proofed broadband directly to their door, the BCPs will provide vital high-speed internet access at locations within the intervention area.

Broadband connections points have been established by Cavan County Council at the following locations:

WIFI4EU - Free Public WiFi

Cavan County Council has installed community Wi-Fi capacity in several towns after successfully being granted funding for the initiative under the Wifi4EU scheme. The networks, which will be limited but free of charge, are established in Bailieborough, Cootehill, Ballyjamesduff, Virginia, Belturbet and Ballyconnell.

Such a capacity already exists in Cavan Town and there is potential for connected areas to apply for further funding under Smarter Town strategies
